In the Body and Through the Eyes is a collection of photos that represent a person’s emotions and experiences throughout the day through a 20-page photo book. I chose to present this series in a book because I wanted something the viewer could physically touch, feel, and experience rather than traditional framed prints.
I wanted to encapsulate the feelings of being stuck inside a body that does not feel like your own, which is an experience that I have experienced. The main subjects I chose to capture were up-close shots of the human body and the eyes. As you flip through the pages, the idea of a person’s body becomes distorted and rearranged to convey the feeling of dissociation from the body. I chose to include time stamps to make the book linear and feel like a personal diary, thus creating a connection between the viewer and the person. There are only two instances where the viewer can see a pair of eyes, the first being a collaged picture of multiple eyes and the second being the very last spread of the book where the figure is shown staring directly at the viewer.
Intimacy, dissociation, and vulnerability are the three main themes I chose to work with in this photo series The last figure in the last image intentionally looks back at you to reverse the roles of the figure and the viewer; you are being watched and analyzed this time conveying a sense of self-awareness of yourself.
