Artist Statement

Retrospection is a collection of photographs highlighting the relationship between emotions and memory. The 21 images within the series demonstrate how time affects memories. I used Adobe Photoshop to manipulate the portraits of people to create a sense of emptiness similar to how we are forgetful of specific details when remembering moments in life. The manipulated space disrupts the image creating an unsettling feeling of isolation and mystery. The viewer is stuck with the feeling of the photo rather than the photo itself. I chose this theme of memory and isolation because I often find myself thinking of memories that are significant to me, but I can’t remember many details, only the emotions I felt in that moment.
