Subsurface , 2024
Subsurface is a photography series featuring cyanotype prints enhanced with embroidery that explores the unsettling awareness of being observed by others. The manipulated figures appear ghostly, blending into their environments to evoke the state of vulnerability that derives from being perceived. The red and white thread surrounding each subject draws attention to their presence, forcing the figure to become an object of perception, existing in other’s minds in ways it may never be aware of. Perception affects identity. Highlighting areas within the composition focuses the eye on specific areas while hiding others which is symbolic of how we change our looks or behavior to hide parts of ourselves we don’t want others to see. The series captures the complexities of human experience that words often fail to express, representing the unconscious perceptions of ourselves and others.
